Safety Inspector crushed to
death by steam crane

The Taylor Hubbard Steam Crane

A safety inspector died during the inspection of a steam powered crane at the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway last Friday.

51-year-old John Betchley of Weston-super-Mare became trapped and was crushed between the jib
and a cable drum winch, whilst the crane was in operation.

The Taylor Hubbard steam crane (seen above) was built in 1947 and is still used by the railway for track laying and other heavy lifts.

Mr Betchley was carrying out an annual inspection of the crane on behalf of Royal and Sun Alliance.
